DoCoMo, Samsung Likely to Team up for Smartphone Chip Development

NTT DoCoMo and Samsung Electronics are reported in talks to set up a joint venture to develop chips that control wireless communications and signals for Smartphones, according to a September 12, 2011 report by Nikkei. Other Japanese companies, Fujitsu, NEC, and Panasonic are also likely to be included in the partnership. The new JV is expected to be headquartered in Japan, with capital investment of approximately 30 billion yen (US$391.1 million; US$1=76.7 yen). DoCoMo is projected to take a majority stake in the JV. It is reported that the partners will adopt the chips developed by the JV on their own Smartphone products, and the JV will also sell its chips to other manufacturers.
